“It’s an honor just to be Asian.” When Sandra Oh said these words at the Emmys in 2018, I think a moment of silence was needed to collect all our past, present, and future.

It’s #aapiheritagemonth and this morning as I ate mul naengmyeon for breakfast with my partner, James, I was grateful that this time was not just a month long. Grateful that it was every moment we were at home or that I spoke to my friends. I celebrate being Korean every breath I breathe even when I’m not sure what it means or looks like. I’m so grateful and honored in all the complexities of my hyphenated identity to be Asian American. And it took time to understand and appreciate it.
